![]() Nathan R. Stoltzfus As a senior nearing the end of of my last year here a Eastern Mennonite University, I have concentrated my studies in both art and psychology. This background is expressed within the concepts and ideas that I have chosen to use in the subject matter. As an art major I have used people, experiences, and personal interests as a starting point and also as the subjects in my art. My intention is to show a part of who I am as a person, and in return I hope it will allow viewers to look at the work and come away knowing a part of me. As for the work itself, I tend to use images that intrigue me such as the human figure. The work entitled "Celestial Spirit is an angel that represents the presence of faith and the direction that we as Christians strive for. The humble position of the angle, as she cradles herself within her own arms, symbolizes the faith we have within us. A majority of my other work consists of horses as the theme. My first word as a child was horse, and for the past 23 years they have been an integral part of my life. This is why a great deal of my work revolves around this subject. My intention is to show that the horse is a being that is capable of expressing its feelings. For the viewer, my hope is that they be able to grasp that same connection, understanding, and influence that horses have had in my life. Art is an expression of who I am and what moods or feelings I have at the time. To be able to incorporate a concept of expressing feelings and sharing myself as a person, and to have others view the same thing is extremely rewarding. The idea and process of the creation can be more valuable to an individual than the end result. My hope is to encourage others to enjoy the process of expression throughout their lives and to encourage viewers to look their own experiences in a different light. |
